HIGHLIGHTS

THe ApathY Effect EXHIBIT

open from 9 - 4 PM. Guided TOURS will be provided.

THE STORY

The Apathy Effect immerses you in stories of resilient young survivors of human trafficking from around the world. Experience the response of everyday people who were ignited with empathy when confronted by exploitation and the apathy that fuels it.

The multi-media exhibit and empowerment program is geared to ignite empathy and educate and empower participants with a response to issues of exploitation.

The multimedia journey is told through original film, photography, and artifacts with self-guided or interactive tours adding to the experience. Learn how and why this is happening, what iEmpathize is doing about it and how you can engage to end it.

MORE ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

THE EMPOWER YOUTH WORKSHOP

FOr youth in grades 7 - 12. Registration Required.

Why a youth exploitation prevention workshop? Because each year millions of youth are victims of trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Many organizations across the U.S. conclude that the median age a child is lured into sex trafficking is 13-14.

Using the most promising practices for exploitation prevention, this 2-hour Empower Youth Prevention Workshop will educate teens in GRADES 7 AND UP to successfully navigate their vulnerabilities in order to stay safe from exploitation. Short films, activities, and discussion questions will also empower attendees with leadership skills to help eradicate human trafficking and exploitation.

"The Empower Youth Program is incredibly relatable for youth and shares information in a powerful, yet non-sensationalized way. The youth I’ve worked with latch on quickly to the concepts and are able to recall and apply the material to their own lives. EYP gives youth the language to discuss exploitation in a healthy, helpful way." - Erin Drum, Community Engagement and Prevention Director, UnBound Seattle

ARTS-BASED TEACHING & LEARNING:
"Last exit to brooklyn"

Priti and Sarah are honored to choreograph and present

"THE TRINITY OF TRAFFICKING" poem with the background score of "Last Exit to Brooklyn" for Fay from ImPACT Virginia.

Mrs. Priti Gosar-Patil has been a Indian Classical Dance (Bharathanatyam) Teacher and Performer with the Apsaras Arts Dance Group, directed by Mrs. Uma Chetty for over a decade. Ms. Sarah Burke has a bachelor's degree in theater and has been studying this sacred dance form with Priti for several years. "Bharathanatyam" is an ancient classical dance form of India developed in temples for spiritual upliftment, and has retained that purpose in the modern day as a performing art. It uses rhythmic footwork, hand gestures and facial expressions for telling a wide range of stories.

This ground-breaking document released by the U.S. Department of Education in January 2015 inspired ImPACT to organize this event and gather students from across Virginia.

Join us as as we apply the recommendations in this document. Our guest experts will explain the nature and scope of a form of human trafficking called sex trafficking and why prevention education about this hidden form of child abuse is necessary to help youth stay safe from the predatory tactics of sex traffickers. We will teach youth how to recognize, respond, and report exploitation so that they are safe and successful.

Read the Virginia PTA's Resolution on Child Trafficking and its urgent call for schools to implement protocols and prevention strategies.
LIsten to a podcast on how youth can become victims of sex trafficking and why schools need to respond to this growing public health issue.

ImPACT was created by Fay Chelmow after she read this document and discovered that schools were being used by sex traffickers to find youth who they could lure into commercial sexual exploitation like prostitution, pornography, stripping, and escort services. Fay is working hard to raise community and school awareness about this hidden crime and the dire need for trauma-informed action. Help us fight this overlooked form of child abuse today!
